Here we hope to answer some of your most commonly asked questions. If what you are looking for is not addressed here, please contact us for assistance.
How will location affect which safety shower I choose?
Hughes manufacture safety showers to suit all environments and climates. To ensure you select the right safety shower for your site, ask yourself:
What is the ambient temperature of the location of the hazard on your site? Do you have sufficient drainage to contain potentially contaminated water? Do you have a potable and reliable water supply with enough pressure at the site of the hazard? Is the shower being used in an explosive area? Are there any electrical requirements such as ATEX or IECEx?
Answers to these questions will help our sales team guide you to the right safety shower for your site, whether that’s a jacketed and insulated safety shower for frost protection or a tank shower for a remote location with no water supply, we have a solution for all locations.
Help! I need an emergency safety shower but have no water supply available at the site.
Help! We experience low water pressure in the hazardous area.
Don’t panic, our emergency tank showers feature an overhead gravity fed tank and are essential where a constant water supply is unavailable or where water pressure is unreliable. The 1500L model meets EN and ANSI standards providing at least 15 minutes continuous water flow at 76 litres per minute.
How do I comply with European and International standards for emergency safety showers?
Both EN15154-2 & 5:2019 and ANSI Z358.1-2014 recommend performance requirements for safety showers and eye washes such as water temperature, flow rate, operation, location and testing. Hughes have put together useful summary documents of each standard to assist you in understanding the guidelines. If you need help or advice on meeting current standards, please contact us.
I have a 2-week project for which I need a safety shower, can I hire a unit?
Yes, if you need a safety shower for a week, a month or even a year but don’t want to commit to a purchase then we have three models available to hire. This service is available in the UK and Germany, and via our distributor Gelis in Belgium, the Netherlands and France.
Can I order spare parts for my existing Hughes safety shower or eye wash?
Yes. To ensure we supply you with the correct part the most effective reference would be the original order reference number, we can then identify the exact model along with any optional fittings. Alternatively, the model number, approximate age of unit and/or a photograph should be sufficient. Please note, orders are subject to a minimum value of £100 plus packing and carriage. For models over 20 years old it may be difficult to source spare parts - please contact us and we will be able to advise you.
How often should I test my emergency safety showers and eye/face washes?
Hughes recommend performing a weekly activation of your safety showers and eye washes in order to ensure the equipment is in full working order. The European standard, EN15154-5:2019 recommends safety showers should be tested at least every month, this should include flow rate measurement and visual inspection of the spray pattern and water quality. All tests should be documented for audit purposes and to remain compliant.
How often should I service my emergency safety showers and eye washes?
It is the duty of every employer to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of every employee and this includes the maintenance of safety equipment. Bear in mind that this is lifesaving equipment and must consistently be fit for purpose. In addition, Hughes recommend a weekly activation of safety showers and eye washes to remove any sediment build-up in the pipework and to ensure correct operation. International standards recommend an annual inspection. The Hughes service team can set up an annual service of your equipment, or more frequent if you prefer.
